We had our amazing little team of young people who from our East Durham Creates Youth Panel at East Durham Trust tonight. They helped us to shortlist the artists (who applied for our next major commission) who will be taken through to the interview stage.
They were incredible this evening - giving insightful and thoughtful responses to the artist’s proposals. Thanks to our Youth Panel for coming tonight and helping us make a decision. See you next week to talk about the interview stage. We are looking forward to working in partnership with ASDA and FareShare North East who are reducing unnecessary food waste by donating to various local charities and community groups including East Durham Trust.

Despite a recent call-out for FEED donations, with an amazing response from many generous donators, demand for food parcels has been intense this week resulting in a shortage of, and urgent need for, tinned meat, vegetables and potatoes in particular. Any help is appreciated.

On Power of Youth Day for NCVO Volunteers Week, we would like to celebrate and thank the youth volunteers from our local NCS (National Citizens Service) who have selflessly given of their time and energy to support our FEED and People's Takeaway Projects through such activities fundraising, crowdfunding campaigns, food drives, collecting tin cans, etc.

Today NCVO Volunteers Week is focussed on The Power of Youth, so we are delighted to be able to celebrate one of our East Durham Creates Creative Champions Chloe, who first of all went from being a participant in our East Durham Creates 'No More Nowt Happens' and 'Go & See' Projects to becoming a volunteer in the arts by performing at our East Durham Creates 'If These Walls Could Talk' Project.
She now volunteers with our East Durham Creates Cultural Hubs Project and Youth Panel. With the confidence she has gained, Chloe is now organising her own spoken word event for our Cultural Hubs Project, and in doing so she has contacted a number of acclaimed spoken word artists and stand-up poets for their involvement, including Kate Fox. We done Chloe! Further information on East Durham Creates is available - HERE. Or check out the official East Durham Creates website - HERE. East Durham Trust is attending today’s Share and Support event at Blackhall Community Centre.
It's FREE entry. There will be many agencies at the centre, including ourselves, all offering FREE help, advice and guidance. We’re here until 4pm, so please pop along and say "Hello". As part of our celebration during NCVO Volunteers Week of the many volunteers who selflessly devote so much time and energy in helping and supporting us in such a wide range of ways throughout our various projects, we are highlighting the wonderful success story of East Durham Trust staff member Kylie Austin.
Kylie is a shining example of how volunteering provides major benefits to the individual volunteer such as helping to improve wellbeing, increasing employability and skills, developing opportunities to socialise and meet new friends. She recently progressed to a paid role at the Trust as Community Coaches project coordinator, after spending two years volunteering for the project. The photo gallery above includes a photo of Kylie in her volunteering capacity alongside fellow volunteers at the Community Coaches launch event in 2017, a photo of her with MP Graeme Morris at a recent event she attended on behalf of the Trust and another photo of Kylie with her current volunteers Deb, Graham and Maureen. There is also a 'case study' of Kylie together with three 'case study' quotes from Deb, Graham and Maureen respectively (you can also view a video clip of Graham, above). Finally, there is a press clipping from today's Northern Echo newspaper. Check out a more in-depth article in today's Northern Echo online about East Durham Trust's celebration of Volunteers Week which includes a feature on Kylie - HERE. We hope you enjoy this video clip of Donna, one of our regular volunteers, talking about volunteering for East Durham Trust, filmed specially for NCVO's Volunteers Week.
Look out for further video clips of some of our other volunteers throughout the week. Huge thanks to Shotton Partnership 2000 Ltd for inviting East Durham Trust to their 'What Shotton Wants Day' on Saturday. Loads of fantastic opportunities to promote all our projects but particularly for Kylie our Community Coaches co-ordinator to let people know about the different ways they can access support from her volunteers. Lovely to see supporter of the Trust Grahame Morris MP at the event as well.
A huge "Thank You" to our friends at Merrick House for their generous donation of items to our FEED Project this morning.
In spite of this, however, our stocks are now severely depleted yet again, as demand continues to soar on a daily basis, far outstripping the level of donations we receive. This morning, for example, and within a matter of minutes, we had 6 referrals come in for food parcels to feed around 15 people, and yet more have been coming in this afternoon. These photos, taken today, highlight the current lack of basic food items in our FEED cupboard. As you can see, we are in desperate need of all staple products, including tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, tinned soup, tinned fruit and puddings, pasta sauces, Weetabix, tea & coffee, etc. Any donation is, no matter how modest, will be greatly appreciated and will help support families and individuals in need at this time - Thank you! Further information on our FEED Project is available here. Brilliant to see our art project East Durham Creates working with our Adult Learning Courses last week to teach them how to create Zines (home-made magazines). The groups had a brilliant time learning new skills through art!
