Love a good natter? We might have the perfect role for you! Become a Chit Chat Telephone Befriender and help reach out to lonely and isolated people who are housebound or have limited access to companionship or community activities.

Our one-to-one befriending service, aims to reduce the isolation, helping to rebuild confidence, regain independence and provide a regular companionship. We are currently looking for more volunteers to continue this invaluable service. 

As a Chit Chat Telephone Befriender, the role involves:
​
  • Carrying out regular telephone conversations
  • Promoting the taking part in recreational activities within the local community
  • Providing information on other services available in the local area

Desirable criteria:
​
  • Good communication skills
  • Good listening skills
  • Commitment of a minimum of 2 hours per week
  • A sensitive attitude towards other people
  • To be open minded and non-judgemental
  • A friendly and patient approach
  • Enthusiastic with a positive attitude
  • An awareness or experience if the issues affecting people with isolation and loneliness
  • Reliable and trustworthy

Working as a Chit Chat Telephone Befriender you will gain:

  • Mental health awareness training provided
  • GDPR training provided
  • Peer support

We work directly with community members and partners to facilitate prevention, intervention and crisis support services delivered in our communities, for our communities and by our communities.

We empower people to take ownership of their own needs and work to lift up those most in need in East Durham. We help build and maintain meaningful relationships within our community ensuring those on the margins are helped to be in reach of a spectrum vital services.
