Charity Foodbank East Durham Trust says the roll-out of Universal Credit scheme across the area has led to it stepping up its efforts in relation to emergency food parcels in former mining communities. The Peterlee Job Club is one of nine that operate across East Durham, giving people a place to make job searches and update CVs in venues much closer to home and are less formal than Government-funded centres such as jobcentres and colleges. To mark its achievement of reaching 500 attendees, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington, Ron Hogg, visited to present a certificate to commemorate the landmark figure. A team of young music fans are preparing to stage their own sold-out gig after going on the road to discover how live shows come together. The group from Dawdon Youth and Community Centre are set to host their own night of live entertainment featuring Barry Hyde, the Futureheads member who also performs solo, as part of a packed bill of acts.
It is one of a series of events in the 'No More Nowt Happens' project, which brings together young people to help them plan and stage their own event with professional performers and artists in no-traditional venues - and prove the point that plenty happens in East Durham. The volunteer-led ‘People’s Takeaway’ project - run by support group East Durham Trust - was officially launched yesterday by New Tricks actor, Alun Armstrong, in Peterlee.The project will see hot takeaway food prepared and delivered to families facing hardship. Alun, who grew up in Annfield Plain, County Durham, said: “I’m the son of a Durham pitman myself so all the terrible things that have happened to the villages since the collieries were closed, and the deprivation and the hardship of the people living in these areas have suffered, has always been close to my heart." Original songs were written for the event by former Chumbawamba member Boff Whalley, with the lyrics reflecting the stories told by local people of their memories of the seaside location. Since setting up, the Seventh Street venue has welcomed hundreds of visitors, established a number of regular activities and recruited local volunteers to help out.
