Community Energy Advice

Struggling with energy bills or unsure where to start with making your home more energy efficient? You’re not alone, and you don’t have to face it alone. Our community energy advisors are trained to help you look at your home with fresh eyes – that’s where the word assess comes from. It’s not a test. There is no pass or fail. We’re here to help you improve your home’s warmth and make informed choices that work best for you, with no pressure and no judgment.

Who can we help?
Whether you’re a homeowner, tenant, or landlord, if you live in East Durham, we can support you. The service is not means tested and there are no eligibility criteria – we’re here for everyone.

What can we help with?
Our energy advisors are here to help with almost anything energy related. Whether it’s fixing draughts, spotting cold spots with a thermal camera, understanding your bills, understanding your home’s energy performance certificate, or making sure you’re on the best tariff, we’ve got you covered. We can speak to energy providers for you, guide you on government grants for renewable technologies, and explain how to get the most from smart meters, heat pumps, or solar panels. Whatever your home needs, we’re here to give practical advice and support that works for you.

What will you gain?
You’ll get a clearer picture of your home’s energy use and understand exactly what’s behind your energy bills, and how to lower them. You’ll learn about your home’s energy performance and discover practical ways to improve it. You’ll get peace of mind knowing you’re not overpaying for energy or missing out on support you can receive, and greater control over your energy use which can assist in reducing your carbon footprint. Along the way, you’ll build a trusting relationship with a local energy advisor who’s there to support and champion your energy choices.

How does it work?
You can fill out the self-referral form on our website, or get in touch via phone, email, or Facebook message. One of our friendly energy advisors will get in contact with you to have a quick chat about where you live and to ask what you’re looking for – don’t worry if you don’t know what you’re looking for, our energy advisors can still help.
An initial visit to your home can take approximately an hour, but can take longer (or shorter, depending). This is because we are trying to get a sense of what you want to achieve and how we might be able to help. Sometimes, we can sort everything in one visit, but we generally assume that we are going to have a few chats and visits.
