NEWS
CREE Project - New Group Sessions
 East Durham Trust have helped to set up a range of groups aimed at reducing social isolation among men.
The Trust are leading on the CREE project which is funded through County Durham and Darlington PCT and supports drop in groups based on an Australian idea known as ‘Men’s Sheds’.
The project is a response to the closure of traditional industries and the loss of social facilities which greatly reduce contact between men, which in some cases can lead to the development of Mental Health problems.
The Trust has helped to set up a number of groups in communities and has trained volunteers in the process. Often the men get involved in various activities but the real focus is general discussion in an informal atmosphere.

CHIT CHAT Telephone Befriending
 Do you know someone who would enjoy a bit of CHIT -CHAT.
Our friendly volunteers like to talk but like to listen too. They will chat about anything such as your day, worries, good news or health.
If you know anyone who would benefit from this service. Maybe someone who doesn't get out very often due to health reasons please let them know about this great new service. Once set up there are no call charges as this is an outgoing call service only.
Anyone who would like to register can call 0191 5693511 and tell us what weekday and time are best for them to receive a call.
Food Donations Wanted

The East Durham Trust FEED project will see hundreds of local residents benefit from emergency food parcels in times of crisis.

Olympic Torch Relay
 The London 2012 Olympic torch relay begins on 19 May 2012 at Land's End and ends 70 days later on 27 July at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium. Visit the BBC website to find out where the torch is going and when. In the local area expect to see the torch on the 17th June 2012 at Peterlee, Horden, Blackhall and Haswell Plough.
East Durham Belles Swim with the Stars
 Six members of the East Durham Belles project were invited to 'Swim with the Stars' at the Ponds Forge pool Sheffield on Saturday 5th November. Members of the Great Britain swimming, diving and water polo teams took to the pool with swimmers from across the country who had reached the final of the Kellogs Amateur Swimming Association 'Swimtastic' Awards 2011. The East Durham Belles project was nominated by Kate Smith, Aquatic Officer ASA North East, to receive the Community Project of the Year Award . Read More
NHS Seeking Expressions of Interest
NHS County Durham and Darlington are seeking expressions of interest to participate in a series of action learning sets lasting for three months. Their focus is designed for organisations that have just started, or are about to start, the enterprise journeys. At the end of the set participants will have:
• Gained an understanding of social enterprise and know how to develop an enterprising culture in their organisation.
• Had an opportunity to explore existing enterprising ideas and develop new ones with the support of fellow participants, facilitators and coaches.
• Agreed with their organisation a plan for becoming more socially enterprising going forward
• Established a peer support network and identified external support services available locally (including coaching and training, finance, networks)
Ideally CD&D is seeking between 8-10 organisations with one or two participants from each. Participants should be the CEO or similar and/or a Board member (appreciate many of the smaller groups will have fewer people and CD&D do not want to exclude them if they weren’t able to field one or other).

Durham County Credit Union
 Durham County Credit Union is a savings and loans co-operative owned and run by its members. If you live or work anywhere in County Durham and are over 16 then you can join.
To join all you need are two forms of identification to confirm name, address and date of birth and pay a £1 joining fee
You can then start saving as much as you like, when you like, up to £5000, using PayPoint, standing order or at one of their collection points. Details of the collection points in East Durham can be found here.
When you have saved for a minimum of 10 weeks and have a minimum of £50 then you can apply for a low cost loan.

New Creative Support Service
Creative Support Ltd. is a not for profit organisation having extensive experience of providing housing related support, general social care and housing services to people with Mental Health needs, Learning Disabilities and general support needs.
The service is funded by Durham County Council and County Durham PCT to provide long-term support and practical help to older people with Mental Health needs living at home or moving to their own accommodation.

FUNDING
Reaching Communities: Buildings update
 As of today there have been some changes made to the eligibility criteria for the Reaching Communities buildings strand.
There are more eligible areas now as they have added data from IMD 2010 and increased the percentage of urban areas that are eligible. (Areas from IMD 2007 remain unchanged)
The postcode checker on the Big Lottery Fund website has been updated and there are some additional documents explaining the changes.
You’ll see that there’s also a process for gaining an exception if a building is in an ineligible LSOA and the beneficiaries in an eligible one.

Wakeham Trust
This trust offers grants of between £75 and £750 to help people rebuild their communities, with particular interest in neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, and projects set up by those who are socially excluded. They also support innovative projects to promote excellence in teaching (at any level, from primary schools to universities). They favour small projects – often, but not always, start-ups. This trust tries to break the vicious circle whereby projects have to be established to get funding from major charities, but need funding to get established.

County Durham LINk Coffee Morning and Surgery Dates
 Local Involvement Networks or 'LINks' were set up by the Government in April 2008 to give local people a stronger voice in how their health and social care services are delivered. All LINks are be managed by local groups and individuals who will decide what their priorities are and how they will work.
The LINk represenatives for the East Durham area are David Taylor-Gooby and Les Goodrum. The reps will be available for you to visit to share your views, concerns an opinions on the following dates:

Commissioning for Families
16 November, 10.00am to 1.00pm at the Glebe Centre, Murton, Co Durham.
Does your voluntary and community sector organisation work with children, young people and families?
• Are you a small/medium sized organisation either new or considering delivering public services for your local area as part of their commissioning strategy?
• Do you want to hear about what your organisations should be considering in order to be part of the new landscape?
Then this event is for you and will be a first step in a learning platform for you to secure sustainability for your organisation and most importantly your service users.
This training is targeted at organisations working with children, young people and their families and is limited to 45 places. The training is free of charge to the VCS organisations, but no-shows or cancellations without reasonable notice (5pm 12th November) will be subject to a £30 charge to cover administration and catering costs.

Alcohol Awareness Week
14 to 20 November
As part of Alcohol Awareness Week 2011 we are being urged to think about the impact that alcohol is having on families, particularly children. Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, is highlighting the dangerous impact that exposure to alcohol is having on children, especially through marketing and advertising. The alcohol industry currently spends £800 million a year on marketing, leading young people to start drinking earlier and to consume more.

Social Enterprise Durham is celebrating Social Enterprise Day next Thursday 17th November, 9-4 at Alington House, North Bailey, Durham.
We will discussing Localism, Transition, Social Impact Bonds and whatever the participants want to create in Open Space.

What will the Localism Bill mean for you and your Community?
You can find out more by coming along to one of our information sessions. We will have a number of guest speakers on a varied programme which will include representatives from Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) and Durham County Council’s Planning Department.
You will also hear first-hand accounts from community groups who are already working towards producing a Neighbourhood Plan.

TRAINING
How to be a Brilliant Organisation
We feel obliged to warn you......This course could seriously improve your ability to run your organisation!
We’ve had a great deal of interest from groups and organisations large and small for a straightforward course that teaches them about general good practice and what they should be doing to make sure they’re always on the right track. From volunteering and governance to marketing and promotion, there’s so much you want to know and there’s never been such a thing as a one day course that teaches it all in one go. Well....until now that is.
Demand was huge for the first course date advertised, which is now full, We are however taking details for expressions of interest to run a second date.
East Durham Trust will be supporting CAVOS in running the course who are experts in the field of Voluntary Sector good practice and are really good at telling people how to do things well! Refreshments & lunch will be included
The training will be delivered to suit the needs of the organisations taking part. However, topics to be covered will include:
• Barriers to volunteering and how you can reduce the barriers for potential volunteers
• Promoting what you do—to the right people in the right way
• The difference good governance makes in attracting and keeping volunteers

Guide for Trustees Thinking About Tendering for Public Services
 NAVCA and the Local Government Association have launched a new free publication called At Your Bidding to mark Trustees' Week (31 October - 6 November). At your Bidding is a guide for charity trustees about commissioning and tendering for public services. It focuses squarely on the key issues that individuals need to be aware of in fulfilling their duties as charity trustees. All trustees of local charities are encouraged to download a free copy.

New Apprenticeships Launched for Third Sector Employers
Three new apprenticeships are now available to support third sector employers in successfully recruiting, training and retaining staff in roles which are key within the sector: campaigning, fundraising and volunteer management.
Whilst the third sector currently lags behind other sectors in providing apprenticeships, employers have reported that they produce a highly skilled, motivated and productive workforce. The three new apprenticeships will provide apprentices with recognised professional qualifications in their chosen fields.
They have been launched by Skills - Third Sector, the registered charity working to make it easier for people who work and volunteer in charities and social enterprises to have the right skills to make a difference to people and their communities.

CONSULTATION
Big Policy Direction
The Cabinet Office is consulting on proposed new Big Lottery policy directions. The result of this consultation will affect how £600m per year of funding is used. The spirit of the proposal is one of guidance that still allows flexibility on the part of Big. VONNE recommend reading the briefing note prepared by Voluntary Sector North West.
Of particular concern are the percentage of the funding that will go to the VCS, and the emphasis placed on the social investment market. The Consultation closes on 18th November.

Interested in Access and the Countryside in County Durham?
If you are interested in how access to the countryside and public rights of way in County Durham are managed and improved, then there are opportunities for you to get more involved. The County Durham Local Access Forum (LAF) is looking for new members, and if you think you have something to offer they would love to hear from you.
The LAF is an independent statutory body which advises the County Council, Natural England and others on matters relating to access, rights of way and recreation. Anyone can apply, but we are particularly looking for people with knowledge or experience in areas such as land management, health, cycling, tourism, motorised recreation and disability.
The Forum meets at least four times a year, usually in the evening, at a variety of venues around the County, and members receive travel expenses. The meetings are open to the public and copies of previous minutes and annual reports can be seen at www.durham.gov.uk/laf .If you are interested in joining the Forum please contact Mike Ogden on 0191 383 4082 or email mike.ogden@durham.gov.uk and you will be sent an application pack.
